When looking for a cheap family holiday with flights from the UK nothing makes a bigger difference to the total price you can get than the departure date. You can pay around three times more for what is essentially the same holiday at certain times of the year. Any time when the school holidays are on the prices of packages and flights go up. If you are very flexible on departure airport you can take advantage of differing school holiday dates. The biggest opportunity is for people from England to get flights and holidays from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports when the Scottish schools reopen in August and vice versa for Scottish families to fly from e.g. Manchester in late June and early July before the English schools break up for the summer.

Apart from that you can book a family holiday overseas cheaper by either booking very early or very late. If you book when flights from the likes of easyJet are first released you can sometimes combine with hotels to create your own flight+hotel holiday for a very reasonable amount. Otherwise booking late when charter holiday companies such as Thomson sometimes ditch their prices to fill the last seats can also be a route to cheaper family holidays. Be warned though seats are very limited so it may be hard to find a deal for a large family. If you have specific requirements such as a two bedroom apartment you might be better off booking early and taking advantage of free or cheap child places.
